Specialty Awards

Normally, we each do an award for the story that resonated the most for us, or jumped out at us the most. In Shatterpath's case, that usually would be a story in a fandom that she doesn't normally follow or doesn't know. If the characters are believable and interesting to her, that usually gets the award from her. In Stormwriter's case, she usually awards based on the one story that completely pulls her in and basically makes her forget pretty much anything else she's read in the calendars.

In this case, we've got separate awards and a group award.

ShatterStorm Award :: "Reconnecting" by Ann

Karen Sisco is a series that neither of us has gotten into [despite having DVD copies of the 2 Marley eps]. We've perused the stories from this fandom in previous calendars, but until now, they've never necessarily made enough of an impression on us to really want to find the 2 eps and watch them.

This story was a lovely mix of personal and professional for these two women. It has a definite beginning, middle, and end, and doesn't rely too heavily on the "case" Karen and Marley stumble upon. Shatterpath adds that she really liked the flow of the story; it was simply and elegantly done.

Shatterpath Award :: "Second Star" by Caitrin Torres

Shatterpath says:
I didn't know what to expect. In fact, I didn't even realize the studmuffin Caitrin even wrote an LWM! Not only did I get the distinct and altogether rare pleasure of a story in my little universe, but to revisit some characters sorely missed. Particularly the bond between Sam and little Cubby.

To me, a tale like this vindicates the quarter million (plus) words written in an alternate universe that so few will give a chance.

I write for me.

I write for the muses.

And I write for the few who have given Light, Water and Muses a chance.

Thank you SO much for playing.

Stormwriter Award :: "Lesbians Anonymous: The Confession" by Rohan Dupre

Stormwriter says:
There are a lot of things I could say about this story. The first thing I'll say is that Rohan Dupre wrote this pretty much aimed at me. She and I go way, way back, and she knows my squicks and squees in fanfic. When she does take the time to write fanfic anymore [which she rarely does], she puts everything into it and makes sure that someone will like it. That someone is usually me, as she fields her ideas through me and Shatterpath. This story is no different, in that respect.

What's different is that she managed to make a fairly convincing plot for Sara and Catherine, a pairing that I have had a very, very hard time with since about 3rd season of CSI. She also managed to do boysmut without being hugely graphic, tho' it was still enough to squick me, given the pairing and setting. My brain and some Draino had a date after reading this one. For one thing, I can no longer stand Gil Grissom, not since he became a weird pod-person in 6th season. That she chose Horatio Caine as his paramour/lover/slave/whatever just sent the willies racing down my spine.

But despite the squick factors, she had me intrigued from start to finish. And this was definitely something worthy of my award.
