Small Steps
by Electronis Zappa

“Elizabeth, something I’ve just got to know” John Sheppard asked entering Dr. Weir’s office.

”Yes what is it Colonel?”

”What is going on with you and Teyla?”

”What do you think is going on with us?” She turned the question back on him though she knew exactly what he was referring to.

”Please Elizabeth, do we really need to play this game? You’re a couple aren’t you.”

”No, no we don’t.” She answered. “And no we are not.”

”Then how do you explain…”

”Not yet.” She cut him off. “We’re taking things slow, this is new territory for both of us.”

”So, how did this happen exactly?” The colonel asked.

”Well, it started on the Daedalus coming back from Earth, shortly before the first accident caused by the Wraith Artificial Intelligence

~The Daedalus mess~

”Elizabeth, is something the matter?” Teyla asked as she entered. The mess was empty save for Dr. Weir

“I think I got used to falling asleep to the sound of the ocean.”

“We’ll be back at Atlantis soon enough, that should help you sleep better. Or I could show you some meditation techniques that could help.”

“I’m sure it would.” Weir agreed

“And it also would not hurt for you to be close to someone.”

“Excuse me?”

“I know you were looking forward to Dr. Wallis joining the expedition and were understandably upset when he did not.”

“I was on the point of tears when he told me he met someone. He said it himself, I was gone for a long time, he had no idea if I would be back or not.”

“And as such you’re alone. I know what it’s like to be a leader, needing to distance yourself from those under you.”

“What exactly are you suggesting?” Weir asked the Athosian

“I’d like to think we’ve become close since we’ve met.”

“We have”

“When I was on earth, I was introduced to the term homosexuality.” Teyla said matter of factly.

“Well, I believe in my, and probably your, case the term would be bisexual, as I’ve only ever been with men”

“So, you are interested in attempting a relationship?”

“Teyla, you’re a lovely woman don’t get me wrong, but I just recently ended a relationship.”

“Of which I am fully aware, I’m not suggesting jumping right in, small steps. I’ve never been in a relationship with a woman either. But we’re both lonely”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
”Ah loneliness. A great man once said ‘I find it very very easy to be true. I find myself alone when each day’s through.’” Sheppard offered.
”Yes, but didn’t he also say ‘I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.’?” Weir returned.
“Well, he was a very complicated man. Hey, if you can get a chance to get to Earth you could take her to see Walk The Line, I know I’m looking forward to being able to see it.”
“That could be interesting, taking someone from another planet to a movie.”
“I hear Teal’c loves them, he’s particularly found of Star Wars”
“He’s integrated himself quite well into Earth culture, if it weren’t for that one unfortunate incident he’d be living off base now, but that does sound like an idea. Take her to New York, give her a full on Christmas experience, do some shopping.”
“Pick me up an Xbox 360.” Sheppard suggested
“Ah, ulterior motives.”
“Well, it does sound like I’m partially responsible for your relationship.”
“Oh are you now?”
“We were watching TV when we saw a commercial for Girls Gone Wild. She was curious, and well, let’s just say there may have been one or two on my hard drive.”
“Well then I suppose a thank you is in order.”
“And that thank you will come in the form of picking me up an Xbox 360? I’ll pay for it and all, but if you’re going to be on Earth……..”
“I’ll see what we can do. Is there anything else, or did you just stop by to discuss my romantic life.”
“No, that about covers it. For what it’s worth, I’m behind you both in whatever happens.”
“Thank you, I appreciate that, and I’m sure she will too.”
“Elizabeth, come in” Teyla greeted her.
“I just had an interesting conversation with John.”
“Oh?” Teyla questioned, pulling the Earthling into an intimate hug
“He asked about us, and apparently he thinks he’s partially responsible for our relationship.”
“Girls Gone Wild?” Teyla asked pulling away in contentment.
“Yeah” Weir answered simply.
“That was quite……….. interesting” Teyla explained, sitting on her bed “I suppose is the proper word. I’d like to think without the Wraith, the Athosians would have had a civilization similar to yours. Of course I’d probably be ruling my planet instead of a small band of survivors, and chances are we may never have met. But a culture where pretty young girls can drunkenly flaunt their bodies like that with no fear of ever being culled, it is defiantly something to fight for.”
“I’ve never heard it summed up quite like that.” Elizabeth answered, sitting down next to Teyla. “But I do understand what you’re saying. It’s not quite the same thing we’ve fought for on Earth, obviously not knowing the Wraith until recently, but the entire history of my country has been about freedom, acquiring it, defending it, spreading it.”
“Very admirable qualities when done properly.
“Moving on, You’re aware that our holiday Christmas is coming up. I was thinking we could go to Earth so you can get the full experience. We could visit President Hayes, see the White House tree. And then there’s New York. Tremendous shopping, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall.”
“It does sound rather exciting. And plus, there would be the three week return trip on the Daedalus with little to do.” Teyla insinuated, stealing a brief kiss from Elizabeth. “It’s a great opportunity to take the next step.”
“Exactly. We would only be gone for a little over a month, I’m sure Colonel Sheppard and Rodney can handle things for that long. I’ll inform Stargate Command during our next report, and in a couple weeks, we’ll be celebrating Christmas on Earth like any normal couple.”
“Except for me being a slightly altered human from another galaxy who had never heard of Christmas or Earth as recently as two years ago.”
“Minor details.” Elizabeth chuckled.
